Book series Topics in Current Chemistry to be relaunched as online journal

Contributions can be indexed and cited faster in the electronic journal format
New York | Heidelberg, 10 August 2015
Springer is relaunching the book series Topics in Current Chemistry(TCC) as an online journal. The individual contributions will appear in six electronic issues per year with the first articles to be published in the fall of 2015. Topics in Current Chemistry is well known for presenting high-quality reviews of the present position and future trends in modern chemical research.
Nobel laureate and series editor Jean-Marie Lehn said: “The transformation of Topics in Current Chemistry into a journal of reviews is an exciting development. The scientific community values the book series greatly and, as a journal, authors will now have their contributions indexed, found, read and cited faster.”
The journal will continue to cover all areas of chemical science, including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine, physics and materials science. The new journal format will allow editors and authors to use tools facilitating the manuscript preparation, submission, review and tracking. Moreover, authors will have the opportunity to publish their articles using the open access publishing model under the Springer Open Choice program. The editorial board of world-leading chemists will transition from the book series to the journal. Wai-Yeung Wong of the Hong Kong Baptist University has been newly appointed as editor for the journal.
“At this time, we aim to further strengthen the reputation and impact of this successful book series by publishing it as a journal. Topical review articles covering present and future trends in modern chemical research will be featured. TCC will benefit from this endeavor in terms of academic impact, journal citations and visibility,” said Wong. “I am also looking forward to working with thematic guest editors and editorial board members to develop TCC into a world-leading academic journal of chemical sciences."
Topical collections of in-depth reviews will provide comprehensive insights into areas where new research is emerging and will be viewable online as they develop. Articles belonging to a topical collection will be highlighted with a button “Topical Collection” directing the reader to a listing of all articles in the same collection. Once completed, topical collections will become available in hardcover print format.
Elizabeth Hawkins, Senior Editor at Springer, said, "The journal format of Topics in Current Chemistry allows us to better disseminate new material and meet the expectations and demands of 21st-century chemists. At the same time, we are able to build on the historical significance of the series, which dates back to 1949.

Springer Nature expands its humanities portfolio with acquisition of renowned publisher J.B. Metzler

Heidelberg | Stuttgart, 31 July 2015
Springer Nature and the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group have agreed that, effective immediately, the Stuttgart-based publishing house J.B. Metzler will become part of Springer Nature. The acquisition follows the recent combination of the majority of Macmillan Science and Education (owned by the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group) with Springer Science+Business Media, to form the new publishing group, Springer Nature. Holtzbrinck holds a 53 percent share in Springer Nature. J.B. Metzler, which was previously part of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, will continue to be based in Stuttgart and will retain the J.B. Metzler brand.
J.B. Metzler, one of the oldest and most renowned publishing houses in the German-speaking region, was founded in 1682. It publishes classics such as Kindlers Literatur Lexikon and the encyclopedia of classical antiquity Der Neue Pauly as well as the works of authors like Friedrich Schiller and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Over the course of its 333-year history, it has established itself as one of the most important humanities publishers, producing respected and acclaimed reference works, handbooks and textbooks.
Beyond its focus on the natural sciences, engineering and medicine, Springer Nature also maintains an extensive international humanities portfolio, including imprints such as Palgrave Macmillan and Springer. The addition of the respected name J.B. Metzler represents a significant enhancement of this portfolio.
Commenting on the acquisition, Niels Peter Thomas, Executive Vice President German Language Science Publishing at Springer Nature, said: “The name J.B. Metzler stands for excellence and sustainability, qualities which lie at the heart of Springer Nature and our approach to publishing educational and professional literature. Furthermore, Metzler’s publications dovetail seamlessly with our humanities portfolio. Our own experience with the parallel publishing of print and electronic editions of the same book will open new avenues for Metzler, while preserving the identity and distinctive character of its books.”
The change of hands has also been welcomed at Holtzbrinck. Christian Döttinger, COO Deutsche Buchverlage, said: “J.B. Metzler is and will remain an essential part of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group. We are confident that this new constellation offers a solution that will allow the small but excellent publishing house to benefit from the experience of the market leader in Germany, while remaining part of our publishing group.”
